There are seven main chakras in the body and becoming aware of them and learning to allow the energy to flow can help you heal emotionally, pysically, and spiritually.

In The Book of Chakras: Discover The Hidden Forces Within You, Ambika Wauters explains that “Chakras are an ancient model that describe the human energy system in its various components.” Chakra is a Sanskrit concept meaning “wheel of energy.”

When a chakra wheel of energy is blocked ,the emotional, spiritual, and physical realms represented by this chakra can be affected and energy can become sluggish. When chakras are balanced and energy flows freely, life will reflect this balance.

The Seven Chakras

The body has seven chakras starting from the root located at the base of the spine and travelling upward to the top of the head where the crown chakra is located. Each chakra is representative of physical, emotional, and spiritual elements and is associated with a particular color.

  1. Root Chakra – Located at the base of the spine and draws energy from the earth. When the root chakra is balanced in a person then they are said to be grounded in the earth’s energy. The color red is associated with this chakra.
  2. Sacral Chakra– Located in the pelvis area near the sacrum. This chakra is often associated with how one values their self and takes care of oneself. It also relates to how one finds pleasure in life. The color associated with this chakra is orange.
  3. Solar Plexus Chakra – Located just above the belly button. It is related to one’s personal power in the world and how much one sees value in himself. The color associated with the Solar Plexus Chakra is yellow.
  4. Heart Chakra – This is located over the heart. It represents life energy. The Heart Chakra represents the love shared in life and is associated with joy, love, peace, openness, and goodwill. The color of the heart chakra is green.
  5. Throat Chakra – Located in the hollow of the throat. This chakra is often blocked when a person has difficulty expressing ideas or has suppressed emotions. The color of the throat chakra is turquoise.
  6. Brow Chakra – This chakra is often called the “Third Eye” and is located between the brows. This center seeks the truth and represents ones innate wisdom. When it is open one’s intuition is easily available. The color associated with the third eye is indigo.
  7. Crown Chakra – The Crown Chakra is located at the crown of the head. It represents a connection to spirit and source of life. The color associated with this chakra is violet.

How to Open Chakras and Allow Energy to Flow

There are many ways to develop healthy chakras. Meditation and visualization are two primary methods practised for this purpose. Meditation may involve taking deep breaths and focusing on the emotional and physical properties associated with each chakra.

Visualizations may involve visualizing the vortex of energy associated with the chakra and giving the vortex the corresponding color of the chakra being visualized. As well the visualization may involve feeling as if you have cultivated the emotional aspects associated with each chakra.
