A Bible Study Reflection on the Passage of Time in a Year and a Life

Oct 2, 2008 Stella Walsh

A Bible study of inspirational passages can be used to reflect on the changing of seasons, marking the passing of a year and the events of a lifetime.

As the year moves forward, it is often framed by seasonal changes such as leaves turning color and temperatures changing. The word "seasons" can also refer to different periods in a person’s life, or to different periods of time in world history.

Bible Study Scriptures for Changing Seasons

The Bible (NKJV) has several scripture readings that provide reflection on the different meanings of the word "seasons."

Genesis 1:14

This verse is about God’s creation of the seasons of the year and the signs that would mark their passage.

Psalm 1:3

In this verse, a righteous person is compared to a tree. They will both produce fruit in their "season" or "at the right time."

Proverbs 15:13

This verse speaks about the power of words that are spoken at just the "right time" or in "due season."

Ecclesiastics 3:1

This verse states that there is a "season" or "time" for everything that is part of human life.

The verse is part of the longer, well-known reading in Ecclesiastics 3:1-8 (KJV). This is the passage that was set to music by Pete Seeger in the 1950s, becoming the hit song "Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There is a Season)."

Acts 1:7

In this verse, "seasons" refers to events. Jesus is telling the disciples that they cannot know God’s plan for when events will take place. They cannot know when Christ will set up his kingdom, or what will take place before this happens.

Galatians 6:9

Here, Paul is encouraging believers not to grow tired of doing good because it will be rewarded in "due season."

Bible Study Activities for Changing Seasons

These activities can be used to reflect on the meanings of "seasons."

  • For all ages, the given verses (above) can be read and a discussion held on the various meanings of the word "seasons."
  • All ages can create prayers that thank God for the blessings given in the changing seasons of the year and of life. These can be created individually or as a group.
  • For all ages, a discussion can be held on the different "seasons" of the church year. (Advent, Christmas, Lent, Holy Week, Easter, Pentecost, and Ordinary Time)
  • For older children and up, a discussion can be held on the different "seasons" of a person’s life.
  • With older children, or adults, a discussion could revolve around the meaning of "season" as it relates to a period of historical time or a period of biblical time.
  • Each member of the group can relate a "season" of their own life that was special to them. Or a "season" or "time" in her family that was important or memorable.
  • With children, a walk can be taken and a discussion held about what that area would look like in each of the different seasons.
  • Group members of any age can create posters or murals depicting the different seasons of the year and the blessings that are received during each season.
  • A cutout of a large tree with branches can be placed on the wall. Each quarter can be decorated to represent each of the four seasons. This can be completed with all ages.
  • There can be a discussion of ways to help people (e.g. seniors) during each of the four seasons. A chart can be made, then one activity can be chosen to be carried out during each of the seasons.

There are many ways to use Bible study to celebrate and reflect on the different seasons of the year and of life. It is possible to include discussions and activities suitable for all ages.
