God Chicks: Living Life as a 21st Century WomanPractical Advice for the Woman Seeking God's Will in Her Life
Author Holly Wagner desires for the reader to understand how important each woman's life is, not just to herself, her family or friends, but to God.
What does a follower of Christ look like in this generation? What are the roles of a woman who wants to live out her God-given destiny in such a cynical world? Such questions are tackled in the book, God Chicks: Living Life as a 21st Century Woman (2003) by Holly Wagner. Author Holly WagnerHolly Wagner is an international speaker and a teacher at The Oasis Christian Center in Los Angeles, where she helps lead the center’s women’s ministry, aptly named "God Chicks." In her book, Wagner spells out her beliefs of what a woman’s functions are as a Christian in this time in history. She breaks each of the eight chapters into some of the characteristics of the woman who seeks to know God’s heart and plan for her life. Who are God Chicks? The book is Wagner’s interpretation of Proverbs 31:10-31. From the "just b u chick" (“We will be effective only when we are being ourselves.”); and the "Warrior Chick" (“Battles are much easier to fight when [God] is on our side!”); to the "Friend Chick" (“One way to build friendships is to show acceptance in spite of differences that may exist between us,”) Wagner’s descriptions of a godly woman’s character speaks to readers with sincerity, humor and passion. Perhaps believers have fallen in the trap of thinking that only Biblical women were important to God because of the awesome jobs He assigned to them: Esther’s courageous stand for her people; Mary’s incomparable role as Jesus’ mother; Mary Magdalene’s friendship with Jesus. Wagner reminds women that God’s promises for those who faithfully seek Him extend to this generation. Despite the skepticism of the current culture, many Christians believe that God does not forget His people; He is faithful to His children. And many Christians find that it takes more faith and courage now to hold on to God’s promises than ever before, as many people rely on their human understanding of theology, thereby hindering the possibilities. Wagner provides practical advice in this day and age for the having-it-all woman. Careers, families, friendships, hobbies, she said, are some of the plates women juggle all at once and while it’s tough, she says that she has yet to meet a woman who wants to give up the blessings/responsibilities God has given her. Although she may be up with a sick child on a work night, her friends call her only to complain, and her husband keeps leaving his dirty socks on the living room floor, the godly woman does not consider dropping any of those plates of mother, friend and wife. The God Chick is called to certain posts in her life because God knows she can handle them with His guidance, because above all, it is His guidance that the God Chick seeks. The Book God Chicks While the book has some repetitive areas, readers get the sense of just how important all decisions and roles — no matter how small or mundane — can impact her future. Thoughts lead to actions, and if the God Chick’s thoughts are constantly striving to know God, Wagner says, her actions will reflect His will in her life.
