An overactive mind, restless body and disconnected soul creates inner discord. Taking time to calm the mind, relax the body and connect to the soul creates inner peace.

Busy schedules, endless to-do lists, and chaos in the world can easily disturb one's peace of mind. Because the mind, body and soul are all connected, discord in one area can affect the others and ripple into all aspects of life: relationships, health, family, work, and community.

Bringing peacefulness to one area can also spread, creating inner peace overall. Choose one area to focus on each day and soon you will have peace of mind.

Create Inner Peace Through Mind

Thoughts, beliefs and judgments all affect inner peace. Follow these suggestions as a way to create a peaceful mind.

  • Limit intake of news. News media often highlight the worst situations occurring in the world. Reading the newspaper upon waking and watching the news on television right before bed is like programming the mind for problems and disaster. These images and thoughts percolate through the mind as you go through the day and sleep at night. Take a break from news and notice how peaceful your mind becomes.
  • Let go of worry. Fearful thoughts of worry can easily escalate into panic, smothering any sense of peace. Stop worrying and start trusting. Trust that solutions will be found, situations will work out, and the universe is supporting all life.
  • Focus on the positive. Focusing on what's going wrong will generate tension, focusing on what's going well will bring relief and create peace. Choose how you want to feel and think thoughts that lead there.

Create Inner Peace Through Body

Bodies are like sponges, absorbing others' energy, moods, and emotions. Holding tension in the body blocks the flow and prevents the release of emotions and foreign energy. Follow these suggestions as a way to get your energy flowing and create a peaceful body.

  • Exercise regularly. Find a form of exercise that suits your pace, rhythm and interests. It may be stretching, dancing, walking, hiking, weight lifting, martial arts or a variety from day to day. Moving the body in a way it likes to be moved releases tension, stress and blocked emotions, leaving the body feeling lighter and freer. This will immediately spread to the mind and create more peace.
  • Be in the present moment. Focusing on the past or future disorients the body as it only lives in the now. Bring attention to the present moment by noticing surrounding sights, sounds, and smells as well as feeling sensations in the body. Notice how calming it is to be in the body in the present moment.
  • Listen to inspiring music. Music is a vibration which resonates in the body. Choose music which is uplifting, soothing or relaxing, depending on what is needed at the time to create harmony in the body.

Create Inner Peace Through Soul

A person's soul enlivens their mind and body. The inner soul is naturally at peace so when a person is consciously connected to their soul, peace radiates through them. Follow these suggestions as a way to connect to the soul.

  • Meditate or sit in silence each day. A continual external focus with noise, activity and daily tasks can interfere with a soul connection. Spending 10 to 20 minutes a day turned inward, sitting in silence with a quiet mind, creates inner spaciousness where one realizes they are a spiritual being, bigger than the mind and body. A person then discovers their core essence of peace, which flows into all aspects of their being.
  • Spend time in nature. Sitting or walking by the ocean, a stream, or in a forest instantly connects one to their true nature of peace and serenity. Take a break from work and chores to access inner peace through nature each day.
  • Practice acceptance. Resistance and judgment leads to struggle and frustration – the opposite of inner peace. Acceptance is simply acknowledging what is instead of denying or resisting it. Accepting self, others and circumstances as they are opens a space for relief and new possibilities to enter. Peace soon ensues.

Taking time each day to calm the mind, nurture the body and connect to the soul will build a reservoir of inner peace which will ripple out into relationships, health, family, work, and community.

Acceptance -- both of self and others -- is my favorite topic! It always has been.

One thing I've learned about acceptance is that people are doing the best they can. Even when they make bad choices or hurt other people...they're doing the best they can given their personality, their past experiences, their state of mind, their struggles. They're doing what makes sense to them, even if they know at some level that it's wrong or they'll regret it.

I think this way of thinking helps with self-forgiveness and peace of mind: knowing and accepting that you did the best you could...even if you made mistakes and have serious regrets. You did the best you could back then, and you'll do the best you can today! (The hard part of this theory is the word "best". It doesn't mean "excellent"....it means "capable" or "to your ability". Not sure if I'm explaining it well!).

Anyway, thanks for this article, Gini! Peace of mind is so important.

Thanks for your comments on acceptance, Laurie. You described it so well - people are doing the best they can given their circumstances (which includes their beliefs, past experiences, pain, and everything else that makes up a person's current paradigm). As Buddha said, everyone wants happiness and to be free of suffering.
