The Life and Ministry of an Influential Female Writer and Minister

Jul 25, 2009 Ellen Abragar

One of today's most influential Christian writers is Joyce Meyer. Meyer's books have influenced thousands of people, both Christians and non-Christians alike.

Joyce Meyer's ministry, evangelism, and literary works inspire Christians to be the best they can be and bring out the leaders in them. After facing much adversity for being a female and becoming a minister, she faithfully followed her calling and set out to fulfill her higher purpose.

Meyer has written well over seventy books that talk about finding strength, confidence, belief, and faith in oneself by forming a deep relationship with God.

Joyce Meyer's Traumatic Past

At an early age, Meyer learned to build a wall of protection around herself because of the sexual abuse she encountered at the hands of her father and other men as she got older. The abuse distorted her self-esteem and self-image which affected her relationships and daily life.

For many years, shame, blame, and guilt plagued her. Meyer says she was unable to offer real love to anyone because she did not have love for herself.

Meyers on Finding God and Renewing Her Faith

It was not until Meyer met her husband Dave, whom she has been married to for over forty years, that she embarked on her new journey of repentance, renewal, and resurrection. Through her growing relationship with God, she learned to love, appreciate, and forgive herself.

Meyer grew confident and felt compelled to help others discover the same. She received the call to minister, something that is normally male-dominated, and rose above all the naysayers who said that a female minister should not be allowed.

Helping Women Through Meyer's Books

Many of Meyer’s books speak out to women. For many centuries and still in many cultures, women are the minority, expected to take a step back to allow the men to take the leadership role. Even in most churches, the clergy is male-dominated.

One of Meyer’s missions is to help women unlock their potential and break the stereotypical mold that has been handed down to them. For example, in her book The Confident Woman, Meyer teaches them to find strength in God and look to Him for answers. She is an advocate for women more so because of her past. She avidly shares her abusive past to show women that it is possible to rise above hardship.

Meyer Reaches Out to Thousands on TV and Radio

Another medium that Meyer uses to get her work out is through her radio and television program, Enjoying Everyday Life. The program is broadcast all over the world.

Meyer stands in front of thousands and thousands and preaches with poise and confidence. She speaks with emotion and ease, making listeners and viewers feel as if she was just an old friend talking to them. Her charisma shines through as she delivers her messages eloquently. This helps people to understand her message and be able to relate them to their lives.

Joyce Meyer’s influence has helped many Christians stay on their path with God. She has also helped non-Christians take steps toward God and toward improving their lives. She continuously finds new ways to get her message out. Joyce Meyer is a great example of someone who uses her faith to create a better life.
