When a person turns down the volume of their ego voice they can hear the gentle, wise words from their inner self, guiding them to improved health and happiness.

As spiritual beings having a human experience, people are often torn between listening to the logical aspect of the human mind or the inner voice of the spiritual self. The analytical part of the brain is great for planning, coordinating events and doing such things as taxes, but the inner self sees the bigger picture and knows how to stay healthy and happy.

Developing intuition is an important step in listening to the inner self. It requires shifting the focus from the chatty mind and external distractions to noticing subtle emotions and sensations in the body. The next step is to ask the inner self for guidance on important topics such as health and wellness, while remaining still long enough to hear the inner wisdom.

How to Develop Your Intuition

Intuition is that gut feeling about someone or something, an inner sense of which direction to go, or a brainwave that suddenly surfaces into awareness. Follow these suggestions to further develop intuition.

  • Notice subtle physical sensations. One way the inner self communicates is through the nervous and electrical system of the body. Pay attention to these subtle sensations to determine what they mean. Goose bumps on the skin usually indicate a strong resonance with someone or something, while an electric current might be a warning. Butterflies in the belly may point to movement in a positive direction, but a knot in the stomach may indicate it's time for a detour. Trust your inner feelings and sensations.
  • Tune into emotions. When a person is taking action in alignment with their inner self and higher purpose it feels good. Tune into the body's emotions to discover if you're feeling enthusiastic or not about making a decision. Sometimes fear of the unknown can cover up enthusiasm for a new venture, or the sadness of letting go of a familiar yet unhealthy pattern can dampen the joy of personal growth, so take the time to release initial reactions to get to the heart of true emotions.
  • Watch for inspiration. The inner self may send a message through a brilliant idea, unique vision or a strong knowing. Don't let the ego mind smother these with doubt or rationalize them with logic. Follow your inspirations and see where they lead.

Intuition is available to everyone. Paying attention to it requires self-awareness and an inner focus. From there, listening to the inner self for guidance becomes easy and natural.

Listen to Your Inner Self to Improve Health and Happiness

The inner spiritual self sees all possibilities and is always providing guidance on what's the next best step. Developing a relationship with the spiritual self is the key to hearing its wisdom. Try these suggestions to open the communication and hear your inner voice.

  • Center within. Being silent and centering within calms the mind and creates an opening where the inner voice can be heard. Sitting in silence or meditation for 10 to 15 minutes daily supports a person to go further into stillness where the spiritual self resides. Give yourself this gift each day.
  • Communicate with your inner self. When the mind is quiet and a person has settled into stillness, one can ask the inner self a question about health or happiness. Sometimes asking a question requiring a "yes" or "no" answer is the easiest. At other times when more guidance is required the answer may come in an idea, an image, a sensation or a simple knowing.
  • Listen to your body. The inner self and wisdom of the body knows what is best to improve health. For any health situation, turn inward and ask the body what it feels. Notice how the body communicates – it may be through emotions, sensations or pictures. Ask it to reveal the source of the health issue and then ask for suggestions for health improvement. Build trust with your body by listening to and following its guidance.

As a person shifts their focus from the mind's logical analyzer to the subtler sensations in the body, they develop their intuition. From there, going deeper into silence and stillness opens the communication space with the inner self where answers to health and happiness are available.
