Many studies have concluded that people with a belief system live longer and survive traumas such as accidents and illnesses better. Survival evidence brought back by those who have had Near Death Experiences (NDEs) is helpful for those who have no belief system because it opens up the possibility that there is an afterlife.
In 1985 a burst duodenum caused Howard Storm, a convinced atheist, to collapse. He was rushed to hospital and in the operating theatre was amazed to find himself out of body, looking at his “corpse”. Although the other people in the room apparently couldn’t see him, hazy figures approached him and started to lead him away. They took him on a journey that seemed to cover many miles.
At first all seemed "normal" but as the journey unfolded his guides started to become more and more malevolent and the environment became darker and darker. Eventually they started to verbally and then physically attack him.
Howard writes in his book: “Then they began to pick little pieces off me with their fingernails and teeth. I experienced real physical pain, and this went on for a long time. I was fighting, trying to fend them off. I was in the centre of a huge crowd, hands and teeth all around me.”
In a state of growing terror he heard a voice telling him to pray. As an atheist, he didn’t know how to pray, but he remembered a few words of the 23rd Psalm. As he said the simple words it seemed like the creatures around him retreated as if they had been scalded.
He looked down at his torn body which seemed to be spontaneously healing. He suddenly had a strong urge for Jesus. He prayed simply “Please help me Jesus.”
Angels of light surrounded him and took him to a place of safety. He went through a life review with the angels and they gently pointed out all the times that God had tried to reach him but his disbelief and cynicism had blocked all help.
They showed him that what mattered to God was not “good works”, but how he treated those around him. After some time of spiritual re-education by the angels he was told that he had to return to continue his life.
Following his recovery Howard Storm, former Art Professor at Northern Kentucky University, was an utterly changed man. On recovery he wrote about this life changing experience in his book “My Descent Into Death.” He eventually became an ordained Minister.
There is much survival evidence that seems to indicate there is an afterlife. Ian McCormack’s testimony can be found on You Tube along with many other stories of Near Death Experiences.
