Review of Dr. Wayne Dyer's Excuses Begone!Recommended Summer Reading - Dr Dyer’s New Spiritual Self-Help Book
Dr. Wayne Dyer is a speaker, writer and teacher often seen on PBS. His new spiritual self-help book, Excuses Begone! will motivate readers to be all that they wish to be.
Dr. Wayne Dyer’s new book, Excuses Begone! is for anyone who feels the least bit dissatisfied with life; for those who feel like they are not living their dreams; and for those who feel stuck in any way. It is a spiritual self-help book that will motivate readers to understand that change is possible. It will provide the reader with numerous places to start. Spiritual Self-Help in Excuses Begone! Dr. Dyer’s new book will also appeal to those already on the path to living their dreams. It will serve as a spiritual shot in the arm; a water stop in the marathon. It will reinvigorate readers to listen to their instincts, believe in their purpose, and remove any remaining obstacles in their path. Highlights of Dr. Wayne Dyer’s New BookAlmost every human being will identify with the message in chapter three of Excuses Begone! titled, “Your Excuse Catalogue.” Here, Dr. Dyer lists and comments on the eighteen most common reasons – well, excuses - people habitually use to suppress the desire to do what they truly want to do in life or in the moment. Dr. Dyer discusses these excuses in a way that can truly cause a shift in thinking. After reading this chapter, people will get that tingly feeling of excitement in the belly that maybe, just maybe, there is a way to express their true selves, whom they have been keeping in hiding deep inside. Dr. Wayne Dyer on Compassion in Excuses Begone! Chapter ten of Excuses Begone!, on the topic of compassion, is another highlight that should be required reading for all of humankind. It serves as a reminder that people do indeed have the power to impact the lives of those around them, and that concerns larger than each individual exist. This shift in focus to the spiritual is sometimes all that is needed to get people unstuck. Helping others also helps the helper. Dr. Wayne Dyer's Spiritual PerspectiveDr. Wayne Dyer does not give scientific facts, the latest proven successes in psychotherapeutic approaches, or the brain science of Dr. Daniel Amen. But what he does is just as effective. Dr. Dyer talks about transcending the limits of the human mind and body through affirmations, faith, and alignment with the part of self that is soul or spirit. For those with a traditional western spiritual orientation, or no spiritual orientation, some of Dr. Dyer’s ideas may seem kind of "out there," and he even acknowledges this at one point in the book. This should not deter the reader, as one does not have to subscribe to every spiritual concept in Excuses Begone! to benefit. The spiritual perspective offered by Dr. Dyer is beneficial because it helps readers think outside the box of limitations humans often find themselves in. No discussion of self-help is complete without some attention to the idea of transcendence that the spiritual view brings. Indeed, sometimes that which takes years to accomplish in psychotherapy can take five minutes with a spiritual encounter. Dr. Dyer’s study of spiritual texts makes him a credible spiritual writer. He extensively studied the ancient Tao Te Ching, written by Lao-tzu. He relates stories and sentiments from this and other great spiritual texts such as the bible, as well as from inspirational leaders and writers like Martin Luther King, Jr. and Henry David Thoreau to illustrate many of his points. The more the reader gets into the book the more he or she will begin to see the possibilities that exist in this life. A Few Drawbacks to Excuses Begone! The first two chapters of the book are not nearly as wonderful as the rest. In the beginning of the book, the premise that Dr. Dyer lays out does not seem new or groundbreaking. But those who keep reading will find that Dyer does what he does best throughout the rest of the book: motivating people to understand that there are great forces in the universe that they can access that are right inside themselves. Dr. Dyer May Inadvertently Distance Himself From His ReadersDr. Dyer sometimes uses examples of struggles from his own life to illustrate a point. Some of his examples are helpful but others draw upon minor struggles and highlight his present life of abundance. The reader may easily dismiss these examples, thinking that they don’t apply to someone who is in truly difficult circumstances, as the reader may be. Dr. Wayne Dyer does come from difficult beginnings and had to overcome much. It seems that examples from his life when he was truly struggling would have more of an impact and would let the reader know that Wayne Dyer is a “regular person” too, who can relate to the reader’s struggles, and that his principles apply even in - and perhaps especially in - severe circumstances. Dr. Dyer intimates that Lao-tzu himself helped him write Excuses Begone! Wayne Dyer is credible enough on his own without having to make such a claim that may be hard for many readers to swallow. Dr. Dyer does advocate keeping to one's truth though, regardless of what others may think. His statement about Lao-tzu may be an example of him practicing what he preaches. Overall, reading Dr. Wayne Dyer’s new book, Excuses Begone! is an uplifting experience that will motivate people to stop suppressing their true selves. The further readers get into the book, the more motivated they will become to throw off the strictures they have put on themselves and to be the best they can be for their own benefit and for the benefit of humanity.
