In their latest book of the teachings of Abraham, The Astonishing Power of Emotions: Let Your Feelings Be Your Guide, Esther and Jerry Hicks further clarify how to utilize the Law of Attraction to attract what we want in life.
Well before The Secret, the best selling book and DVD featured on Oprah and Larry King Live, brought the Law of Attraction to the forefront of public attention, Esther and Jerry Hicks were writing and presenting workshops on attraction. For those unfamiliar with their work, Esther Hicks channels communications from the spirit world in live presentations across the country. Abraham is the name she uses to identify the spirit beings who teach through her.
A fundamental teaching of Abraham is that wellness and abundance are the natural human state. This seems hard to believe given all we see around us in the world, but we are taught that wellness and abundance naturally flow to us when we allow it.
Emotion is the indicator of whether we're blocking or allowing this flow. A positive emotion tells us we're aligned and open to attracting the good things we really want. Negative emotion indicates the opposite, that we're blocking or disallowing positive flow and are attracting the negatives of life.
In The Astonishing Power of Emotions, Abraham teaches that humans are dual beings: simultaneously a non-physical soul and a physical human being. When our physical self focuses on something we want, perhaps by experiencing something we don't want, that want is immediately available to, and becomes a part of, our non-physical being. If we are open and allowing, the thing wanted will be drawn to us. However, if we are disallowing through negative thinking our want will remain distant. Because of the separation between the want our non-physical self already experiences but our physical self doesn't, we feel negative emotions.
Though The Secret didn't make this clear, Hicks relays Abraham's message that the direction and intensity of emotion is critical to understanding attraction. Feeling negative emotion in response to something we want is a clear indicator that we're blocking that something from being attracted to us. Abraham likens this to paddling a canoe upstream against the current. We may work very hard, but make little progress.
To turn the situation around, likened to drifting downstream with the current, we're advised to shift our thinking by focusing on anything that brings somewhat more positive feelings. As our emotions become more positive we become more open and allowing to the natural workings of attraction.
Nearly 80% of this book is devoted to specific examples of advice Abraham provided to the questions of workshop attendees. In each case Abraham recommends thoughts to hold in mind that will shift a person's thinking from blocking to allowing, from paddling upstream to floating downstream.
The examples cover a wide range of human problems, such as:
