The Turin Shroud - Is it Genuine or a Fake?

Dr. Richard Kent Authenticates Turin's Famous Shroud of Jesus Chris

Doctor and scientist Richard Kent conducted an in-depth study of the Turin Shroud. He claims he has evidence to support the genuineness of this amazing artifact.

The Turin Shroud is reputed to have been the linen cloth used to cover Christ's body in the tomb after his crucifixion approximately 2000 years ago. Although many venerate the cloth as an image of Jesus, scientific studies in the 1980s cast doubts over its authenticity.

On Revelation TV's World in Focus show, Dr. Richard Kent, physician and scientist spoke about new evidence to supports the genuineness of the Turin Shroud.

Was Leonardo Da Vinci the Turin Shroud Faker?

One of the biggest arguments used against the Shroud of Turin's authenticity was the radio carbon dating, which placed the shroud in the 14th century. Could that mean that it was a clever fake created by a genius like Leonardo Da Vinci?

Dr. Kent cast doubts on the findings of the radio carbon dating tests. These tests measure the amount of radiation left in the material against a scale of the half life of Carbon 14. He suggested that during Christ's resurrection, soft X rays were generated, which caused the image to be created on the shroud. There is evidence that some of the fibres were burned by this radiation. If this is the case, then could this have increased the amount of radiation in the fabric, thereby skewing the carbon dating tests?

The Coins on the Turin Shroud Eyes

It was customary to place a coin on each eye of the deceased before wrapping them in the grave clothes. Studies of marks left by the coins on the Shroud image by Professor Alan Whanger, emeritus professor at Duke University, show that they were minted at the time of Pontius Pilate and dated AD29. Images of similar coins can be seen at The Menorah Coin Project.

Pollen and Limestone Dirt Evidence

Dr. Kent went on to say that forensic scientists have studied the fibers minutely and they have found pollen grains in the fabric that could only have been found in Palestine - and certainly not in medieval Italy. Moreover the dirt on the shroud was found to contain travertine limestone such as is found in tombs in Jerusalem.

Three Dimensional Imaging Proves Shrouds Authenticity

In 1976 the unique 3D properties of the Shroud were discovered by Dr John Jackson, Dr Eric Jumper Rev Dr. Kenneth Stevenson, Giles Charter and Peter Shumacher of the Colorado USAF STURP team.

Using the highly sophisticated VP8 NASA 3 dimensional computer designed for NASA and the Gemini space project they scanned the Shroud. The results were astonishing, since the resulting image was three dimensional. A two dimensional object should not give rise to a three dimensional scan. This proved that the Shroud could not be a two dimensional fake.

Turin Shroud Exhibition at Coventry Cathedral, UK

The Turin Shroud, housed in Turin's Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, is rarely exhibited to the public.

However there are six official replicas which are exhibited around the world. At the moment one of these replicas is on show at Coventry Cathedral and it will be available to the public until 11th May 2009. There is no entry charge for the exhibition, although the public are asked to consider making a donation.

There is actually no residual radiation in the shroud. The radiation only happens when the carbon-14 decays, and gives off radiation. The radiation it gives off is a beta particle (electron), which has very low energy.

There is no way that a "soft x-ray" can increase the amount of Carbon-14 in the shroud. The energy needed to transform the atomic nucleus would destroy the shroud.

I have no idea about the authenticity of the shroud, by the way, just stating some scientific facts.
